Famous travellers from India
1. Bimal Mukherjee was the first Indian to globe-trot on this bicycle back in the 1920s and 1930s. Read more about him here. He wrote a book called “Du Chakay Duniya“.
2. Nain Singh Rawat, (source Wikipedia), was one of the first of the late 19th century pundits who explored the Himalayas for the British. Read more about him here. He mapped the trade route through Nepal to Tibet, determined for the first time the location and altitude of Lhasa, and mapped a large section of the Tsangpo, the major Tibetan river.
3. Rahul Sankrityayan (source Wikipedia), was one of the most widely traveled scholars of India. He was the one who played a pivotal role to give travelogue a ‘literature form’ and because of this he is called the Father of Hindi Travelogue Travel literature . He spent 45 years away from his home. He became a Buddhist monk and took up Marxist socialism. He was an Indian nationalist and was jailed three times for creating anti-British writings and speeches. He is referred to as the ‘Greatest Scholar’ (Mahapandit) for his scholarship. He was both a polymath as well as a polyglot. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan in 1963. Read more about him here.
