COLOURS OF CULTURE Pondicherry is a melting pot of colonial history and native heritage. Amidst its French architectural wonders, lies the Tamil quarters. Where you find Maison Perumal – a vivid homage to the Tamil heritage of the town. At the family mansion, every day is a festival of colours. Experience the charm of history and the warmth of hospitality extended by a small team of caretakers who love to make you feel at home. RESTORING THE GLORY Housed in a 130-year-old Chettiar mansion, Maison Perumal captures a time when the prosperous Tamil communities thrived in Pondicherry. The structure used to house the Registrar Office, and has been meticulously restored to its original glory by INTACH. Its architectural character is deeply rooted in Tamil culture, with a whiff of French colonial influences. LIVE THE CELEBRATION The minimalistic decor of Maison Perumal’s interiors celebrate a synergy of the two cultures of the town. Multiple courtyards with wooden columns, along with the intricate doorway and ‘thinnai’ showcase the Tamil heritage. While high ceilings, tall wooden doors, arched windows, the stained-glass detailing and colonial furniture is a throwback to French influences. THE DELECTABLE EXPERIENCE Go on a culinary journey with our masterchef to the Goubert Market. A heady mix of spices, colours and noise greet you as you walk through the market. Handpick fresh produce and return to witness a live demo of local delicacies being prepared. A TASTE OF TRADITION The gourmet Tamil cuisine is prepared with traditional recipes, using fresh local produce and features the catch of the day. Savour a culinary experience that will take your taste buds on a journey. The informal dining area too is tastefully done up, and doubles as an exhibition gallery for local artists. Get in the right spirits at our quaint, colonial-themed bar. ART AT HEART Pondicherry is home to a vibrant community of contemporary artists. You can experience their work first-hand as you tour the town and come across artisans, weavers and craftsmen. The streets are lined with cafés, art galleries and boutique shops where you can shop for souvenirs to take home. At Maison Perumal, we support local artists by providing them a platform to showcase and promote their work. PEDAL THROUGH TIME The best way to explore the town is the time-tested way – on a cycle rickshaw. As part of our endeavor of supporting the local community, we arrange cycle rickshaw rides to traverse through the bylanes of Pondicherry. The rickshawallahs themselves are a treasure-trove of stories. With the wind in your hair, and immersive anecdotes for company, you will experience Pondicherry like never before. Hop on to the ride of your life. WHERE WORLDS BLEND The French and Tamil quarters of Pondicherry offer a myriad blend of cultures.
